This program is approved for 4.0 STATE CONTINUING EDUCATION CLOCK HOURS (SCECH). Please also complete the SCECH Participant Data Form if you are requesting SCECH credit. You will also need to provide a processing fee of $10.00 cash or check addressed to Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD). SCECH Forms will also be available at the registration desk.

We welcome you to join us for this 2013 literacy conference. Children who are struggling to read need teachers who are familiar with a variety of approaches to literacy. All participants will be introduced to four highly effective programs for helping struggling readers.  Join us if you are a teacher in any setting, a tutor, a parent or a grandparent.

AN EVENING IN ROME WITH FRANCESCA CARUSO

Beloved WISM guide in Rome, Francesca Caruso, will be here in Ann Arbor, January 31st to give a slide presentation on the fountains, mosaics and beautiful arches of Rome.  Francesca’s gorgeous photographs and captivating stories will help you forget the Michigan winter!  All are invited! Bring your friends and children, too! (Aged 9 and older).

Born and raised in the Eternal City and for nearly 20 years, Francesca has been a licensed local guide offering tours of her hometown -  Rome. Layered with three thousand years of history, the city has been witness to many developments in the Western world. Using it as our lens, Francesca will discuss the history, art, and culture of the past while aiming to gain a better understanding of our world today.

Cost: $5 per person, or $15 per family

Join us for this 2012 literacy conference focusing on joyful and effective methods of increasing phonemic awareness as a necessary foundation for reading. Learn how cultivating children’s sense of language with singing, movement and music has a direct correlation with the ability to read as they get older. Children live into these skills totally unaware they are developing important capacities needed for reading comprehension, for reading with understanding. They learn naturally and joyfully using the powerful tools of imagination and artistic activity that are the natural avenues of learning for young school children!
