Helping Reluctant Readers and Children with Different Learning Styles

We are delighted to present a public conference on literacy, the second of a three-part series

Saturday, April 27, 8:00 am – 1:00 pm, 2013

This conference will be held at the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor, Lower School Campus,
2775 Newport Rd. Ann Arbor MI 48103

This program is approved for 4.0 STATE CONTINUING EDUCATION CLOCK HOURS (SCECH). Please also complete the SCECH Participant Data Form if you are requesting SCECH credit. You will also need to provide a processing fee of $10.00 cash or check addressed to Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD). SCECH Forms will also be available at the registration desk.

We welcome you to join us for this 2013 literacy conference. Children who are struggling to read need teachers who are familiar with a variety of approaches to literacy. All participants will be introduced to four highly effective programs for helping struggling readers.  Join us if you are a teacher in any setting, a tutor, a parent or a grandparent.

Our presenters include:

Linda Williams: Dr. Williams is an expert on literacy and the oral tradition. A Professor of Education at Eastern Michigan University and former WISM director, she has many years of experience in Waldorf, public, and charter schools.

Linda Teaman: Ms. Teaman is a movement teacher with extensive and ongoing education in Spacial Dynamics, Bal-A Vis-X and Rhythmic Movement. She has over a decade of experience teaching music and movement with children and adults.

Anna Rainville: Ms. Rainville is a published author, an award winning teacher with over 30 years teaching experience and expert on singing games.

Margot Amrine: WISM Director and teacher of literacy skills to children from preschool to grade 12 since 1976. Master Teacher with expertise in phonics and the involvement of multi-sensory pathways for learning.

Friday evening, April 26, 7:00 to 9:00 pm

7:00 – 7:45 pm: Registration

7:45-9:00 pm: Keynote address by Dr. Linda Williams. R. T. I. – Response To Incarnation. Dr. Williams will help us see how developing literacy skills in students will support the development of their capacity to reach their full potential as human beings.

Saturday, April 27, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm

8:00 am: Light breakfast. Doors open at 8:00 am, please join us for coffee, snacks and conversation.

8:45-9:15: Introduction and Singing Games

9:15-10:00: Real Spelling with Dr. Linda Williams. Morphology, the recognition, understanding, and use of word parts that carry significance, is one of the often-overlooked building blocks for reading and spelling. Research is now demonstrating the importance of strong morphological teaching. Students who learn how to attach meaning to parts of words will be empowered to be better readers and spellers.

10:00-10:45: Bal-A-Vis-X  with Linda Teaman. Balance-Auditory-Vision-EXercises for brain and brain/body integration. An introduction to these physical techniques to develop skills which can help with eye tracking and other critical skills for literacy.

10:45-11:15: Snack

11:15-12:00: Extra Lesson with Anna Rainville. Waldorf approaches to remedial work. Games and activities to strengthen the developmental path and pedagogical methods to help children overcome the obstacles that lessen their capacity to reach their full potential.

12:00-12:45: The Benefits of the Orton-Gillingham Approach & Phonics with Margot Amrine. Multi-sensory strategies for reading, writing and spelling.

12:45-1:00 pm:  Evaluation and Close
